The stories of his early travels to places such as Egypt and India have credible evidence and indicate that Jesus was much more experienced with a diversity of paths than we have been led to believe.

He had an unusually egalitarian relationship with women, broke social taboos and boundaries, and challenged the hypocrisy of those in power.

Also, as much as he taught about the importance of forgiveness and “loving thy neighbor,” he also embodied a fierce love and passion for justice unrivaled by other major spiritual teachers throughout history.

And yet, over the millennia, the Christian Church has masked the full intensity, splendor and esoteric depth of Jesus’ teachings and consequently turned him into a caricature of his true self, which was profoundly human as well as radiantly divine. These seeds were planted early and by the time Christianity became the state religion of Rome, much of its raw, liberating message was lost. In the process, we forgot that we ourselves can also be divinized.

Jesus taught that there was nothing in him that is not in us. But it’s far easier to put him on a pedestal as the “only” Son of God rather than learn from his example and walk in his shoes.
